چکیده

This paper describes the treatment of comparison and measures in Datenbank-DIALOG, 1 a German language interface to relational databases. Besides giving a short overview of the system architecture the paper shows how design strategies support the development of a habitable system taking as example comparison and measures both of which are important for many application domains of NLIs and non-trivial from a linguistic point of view. In contrast to some former work we pay attention not only to the purely linguistic part but equally to the mapping to the underlying database model. This way we arrive at a balanced treatment of syntax as well as semantics and pragmatics.

Improving habitability of natural language interfaces for querying ontologies with feedback and clarification dialogues

Natural Language Interfaces (NLIs) are a viable, human-readable alternative to complex, formal query languages like SPARQL, which are typically used for accessing semantically structured data (e.g. RDF and OWL repositories). However, in order to cope with natural language ambiguities, NLIs typically support a more restricted language. A major challenge when designing such restricted languages i...

Talking to the Semantic Web - Query Interfaces to Ontologies for the Casual User

The Semantic Web presents the vision of a dynamically growing knowledge base that should allow users to draw on and combine distributed information sources specified in languages based on formal logic. Common users, however, were shown to have problems even with the simplest Boolean expressions [4]; the use of the logic formalism underlying the Semantic Web is beyond their understanding. So how...

Evaluating the usability of natural language query languages and interfaces to Semantic Web knowledge bases

The need to make the contents of the Semantic Web accessible to end-users becomes increasingly pressing as the amount of information stored in ontology-based knowledge bases steadily increases. Natural language interfaces (NLIs) provide a familiar and convenient means of query access to Semantic Web data for casual end-users. While several studies have shown that NLIs can achieve high retrieval...

Semantic Information Preprocessing for Natural Language Interfaces to Databases

An approach is described for supplying se-lectional restrictions to parsers in natural language interfaces (NLIs) to databases by extracting the selectional restrictions from semantic descriptions of those NLIs. Automating the process of finding selectional restrictions reduces NLI development time and may avoid errors introduced by hand-coding selectional restrictions.

Message from the NLIS Workshop Chairs

We would like to thank the DEXA 2002 Workshop General Chair (Professor Roland Wagner) and the organizing committee of the 13th International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications (DEXA 2002) for their support and their cooperation. Many thanks go to Ms. Gabriela Wagner for providing a great deal of assistance. We are very indebted to all program committee members and external r...
